Blackwater Falls & Dolly Sods Wilderness, WV

Back in September, I spent a fantastic weekend in West Virginia, photographing the Blackwater Falls and the Dolly Sods Wilderness. Blackwater Falls, named for its tannic acid-darkened water, is where the Blackwater River leaves its leisurely course in Canaan Valley and enters the rugged Blackwater Canyon. Dolly Sods is a 17,000 acre wilderness area that is on a ridge crest that forms part of the Eastern Continental Divide. It is the highest plateau of its type east of the Mississippi River and is 4,770 feet at its highest point.
